WHAT WE DO

Superspines

Thoracic Rotation

Physiokinetic are delighted to present one of their newest services – Superspines!

Superspines is an exercise class designed for people who have episodic mechanical back pain or who have had similar back pain in the past.  It is a 10 week course comprising 10 one hour classes.  The class has a maximum of 10 participants and is staffed by 2 physiotherapists, one to lead and one to assist/correct technique, making it a unique service.

Modern life often puts stress on our spine. Pain and stiffness can have a ‘switching off’ effect on the body’s postural muscles, often resulting in poor movement quality and compensations.  The class aims to address this by:

  • improving self-awareness of both posture and movement
  • restoring normal movement patterns with automatic activation of the postural musculature without the need for ‘setting/hollowing/bracing’.
  • targeting areas of spinal stiffness using relevant, effective stretches
  • improving confidence in one’s ability to move

Spinal pain is complex with multiple causes and presentations. New research is being published regularly on pain mechanisms and possible solutions, with some making it into the media spotlight, giving the general public a partial view of the overall picture.  NICE (National Institute of Clinical Evidence) guidelines (2009) recommend a functional exercise class for early management of non-specific low back pain. A further review was recommended in 2012 and is pending.

Superspines cannot guarantee an improvement in any individual’s symptoms but does attempt to address some of the factors described above that can either contribute to or occur as a result of spinal pain.

Participants must meet our inclusion criteria in order to ensure the class is a safe environment.  Please call 0121 440 7736 for further information.
