Athlete screening is commonplace in elite sport and takes many forms. One form is used to identify congenital medical conditions such as heart defects. Screening can also be used to measure an athlete’s physical attributes (and potential weaknesses) in areas such as flexibility, strength, coordination and quality of movement. It can be a useful tool in identifying potential injury risk factors and therefore areas of potential improvement. A training program is usually provided as a result of the screening to address the factors identified.
Physiokinetic has been involved in the musculoskeletal screening of athletes for nearly 10 years. Every year, we screen up to 100 athletes. This has been done in conjunction with the Strength and Conditioning coaches at the University of Birmingham. During this time, we have refined our process and now feel we have a valuable product to offer any aspiring athlete (whatever their sport) who wants to improve themselves and potentially their sporting performance.
